Paper title: 'Environmental Justice Dimension of Urban Heatwaves in Dutch Cities: An Alternative Lens for Exploring Socio-Spatial (In)Equalities'.

Abstract: In the last two decades, heatwaves and extreme heat events are becoming fatal and more common in Europe. Future climate scenarios for the Netherlands predict an increased frequency of heatwaves and warmer temperatures. Research already identified that cities and urban areas, in particular, are more susceptible to heat waves. However, not only cities are becoming exposed to such crises, but also are becoming hotspots of inequality because of changing demographics, migration, uneven development, and heterogeneous living conditions. Hence, it is obvious that, like any other climatic event, heatwaves will impact the population differently based on their physical living condition, economic status, and socio-cultural aspect. This paper, therefore, studied, classified, and compared previously conducted studies on heatwaves in the Netherlands available in the Scopus database. It is found that the Environmental Justice dimensions of urban heat have not yet been adequately addressed, resulting in a critical knowledge gap. Furthermore, a predominant focus on the data-driven, quantitative approach (distributive aspect) can also be identified overlooking the socio-cultural perspectives, even though recognition and participation are prerequisites for achieving distributive justice. This study further emphasizes the importance of incorporating social dimension and people's lived experience of heat events for understanding the scenario of socio-spatial (in)equalities.
