Anticipating the next century of wastewater treatment: resource recovery and the blue economy

Activity: Talk or presentationTalk or presentation at a workshop, seminar, course or other meeting

Description

Wastewater treatment has traditionally been designed and operated in order to protect public health and the environment. With increasing demands on society due to population growth, resource depletion and climate change, wastewater treatment has to become a more resource efficient activity. Despite over a century of ‘modern’ wastewater, there is still room to improve the process reducing the environmental impact. But more importantly, there are current developments for substantial resource recovery from wastewater. The lecture will critically discuss options for resource recovery and introduce the state-of-the-art for energy, nutrient and chemical recovery from wastewater.
