Keynote lecture to conclude the first Doctoral Seminar at ETSA UPV (Valencia, Spain), 2 October 2025, dedicated to the topic of Architecture and Democracy with presentations by PhD students who work with welfare state planning case studies. Based on earlier book publications Jaap Bakema and the Open Society (2018) and Architecture and the Welfare State (2015) questions which were addressed included how architecture might be a mediator of democratic culture, and how historical experiences can inform our understanding of the relations between architecture and democracy today.
