Big data evolution in railway operations: from trains to passengers

Activity: Talk or presentationTalk or presentation at a conference

Description

The railways generate lots of data by various ICT systems, including signalling, automatic fare collection, and web-based travel information systems. This makes railway operations a typical domain for big data where big data analytics can be applied to improve the planning and management for intelligent railway transportation. Still there are many challenges in dealing with big data from railway operations, and it is safe to say that we are only at the beginning of revolutionary contributions that big data offer to improve decision-making in railway operations. This presentation gives an overview of the early initiatives in the use and adoption of big data in railway operations with a focus on descriptive and predictive analytics of train delays, and identifies opportunities and challenges of big data for the analytics of passenger delays in railway transportation.
