Description
Art and design have an important role to play in the development of society by critically challenging the “natural order” of things. In selecting the theme “out of order”, we draw inspiration from the great design academies of the 20th century, such as the Bauhaus (whose centenary we’re celebrating this year) and Black Mountain College. Many of the graduates of these schools went on to become the most influential artists and designers of the 20th century, because the ethos of these academies and their students went beyond a purely vocational approach. The ambition of these great institutions was the education of sovereign citizens, of artists and designers who could contribute to the construction of a democratic future after the catastrophe of the Second World War.Today, when the catastrophe of the Anthropocene unfolds before our eyes, we urge art and design students to understand their responsibility in the construction of a desirable future.
Critically challenging that which presents itself as the natural order of things requires a thorough understanding of the world that includes both the material as well as the subjective, since matters like feelings, tastes, preferences or opinions too have critical agency in this world. Artists and designers who aspire to making a positive impact on the world today need to be able to combine these two in a meaningful manner, which requires artistic, scientific, political and technological knowledge. The program of the Studium Generale 2019 provides a collection of speakers and workshop facilitators who critically challenge the order of things.
