Cross-cutting Methods for Nuanced Reading of African Urban Communities

Activity: Talk or presentationTalk or presentation at a conference

Description

The paper pursued a methodological query into the urban forms in Addis Ababa known as Sefers. Based on three case 'sefers' and employing a cross-disciplinary approach, it presents cases of state owned ‘informality’ where communities use rented housing to generate livelihoods and social security. Using in-depth interviews and visual ethnographic mapping, it files cases to the larger argument, the need for context driven reading of African cities.
