Description
Over the past decade there has been an increased attention for a new generation of innovation policy to tackle societal challenges and drive transformative change. This can be seen as a response to the shortcomings of previous innovation policies focussed primarily on economic growth, which not only largely failed to address the urgent societal challenges of our times but might inadvertently have contributed to their worsening. Hence, an important underlying assumption within this new generation of innovation policy is that these challenges are, in part, the result of the way policies influenced our current socio-technical systems. Consequently, a complete change of our current production, consumption, and innovation systems appear crucial to achieve more desirable futures. To this end, a new approach to systems innovation is required, that goes beyond a mere understanding of the current system and its problems. A systems approach to innovation involves a thorough inquiry to identify and act around leverage points, to engage with paradoxical demands, and to collectively foresight to foster forward-looking action across all societal levels. Hence, we ask: how can current innovation approaches go a step further via the disruption of institutionalized practices and network linkages, and the strategic creation of new innovation system elements to mobilize actors and actor groups? This track puts system innovation central stage and invites contributions which questions, explores, advances, or operationalizes the concept of system innovation for societal transitions. We aim to gather theoretical studies that explore the concept of system innovation from different theoretical perspectives (i.e. transition studies, innovation studies, system thinking), empirical studies of in-depth case and comparative studies, investigating past or recent examples of system innovation processes, and methodological and/or experimental studies that investigate the concept of system innovation and its role in designing for better worlds. Our ambition is to foster and create a research community of scholars around system innovation for transitions and transformations. Keywords: new generation of innovation policy, transformative change, system thinking, system innovation
