We have become increasingly aware of the (negative) social and ecological impact of the materials that are required in our modern societies to eat, (re)build houses, provide energy and live. Our dependency on fossil fuels, linear organisation of the use of materials and geopolitical dependencies are all part of the unsustainability of our current materials economy. The Port of Rotterdam (Nico van Dooren, Monique de Moel and Ruud Melieste) asked DRIFT to, together with stakeholders, develop an integrated perspective on the Port of Rotterdam’s challenges posed by the raw material transition: to provide an analysis and transition strategies on how to move through the complexity of the uncertain development of the current port system, the different resource streams and a variety of actors and transition trajectories. Several experts and actors from in and around the Port of Rotterdam have taken part in developing the analysis and strategy this document describes. Their participation has co-shaped this analysis by providing their strategic views and creative ideas and by validating our analysis and conclusion in interviews and/or in one or multiple (online) sessions.
