Enhancing Student Experience While Modernizing the Curriculum

Activity: Talk or presentationTalk or presentation at a workshop, seminar, course or other meeting

Description

Rewind two years ago and imagine the task at hand: combine 300 students with diverse backgrounds and prior knowledge, a mix of exam and group project assessments on more than a dozen topics covered by 50 teachers and assistants, all mixed together with a healthy dose of programming---a recipe for disaster? Perhaps. But after two years our students are happier than ever---how did we do it?

The talk is based on the first-year MSc module CEGM1000: Modelling, Uncertainty and Data for Engineers (MUDE); a 12 ECTS requirement for all MSc students in the faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences. Speakers include Robert Lanzafame, Sandra Verhagen and Tom van Woudenberg.

During this Meet & Eat, the MUDE Team will share their perspectives from the last few years, with a particular focus on decisions made to improve the learning experience of students. Topics include the way in which feedback was obtained as well as organizational changes made to the teaching team and module websites. We will show how we incorporated digital tools in an innovative way, but the talk focuses more on sharing experiences to support other teachers and/or administrators who may find themselves in similar situations now or in the future. Visit the MUDE website and interactive textbook to learn more.
