Description

Distributed and Centralized Estimation in Wireless Sensor Networks

Sensing external phenomena using sensor networks is of great importance for environmental monitoring, for security, in the defense sector and in healthcare. There are many theoretical and technological open issues on how to best design and place sensors, perform inference and estimation and communicate amongst sensors that need to be addressed in order to make this technology broadly viable. Sensor Networks are designed to perform three fundamental tasks: sensing a physical field, transmitting the data to a central receiver or to nearby sensors, and making centralized or distributed inference. The goal of this special issue is to touch on all the aspects of estimation using sensor networks in order to push the boundaries of this important research area.
