Falling from Eden (FFE) is an interactive lecture–workshop presented as part of the For Love of the World Festival: Digital Revolt at TU Delft. Designed for a general audience, it explores a simple but urgent question: how do AI-generated images reshape how we see, think, and make meaning?Rather than treating artificial intelligence as merely a technical tool, the workshop invites participants to experience how text and images continuously shape one another. Over the course of an hour, the audience engages in a shared experiment: words generate images, images influence perception and feeling, and those responses are translated back into words — producing new images in turn. This recursive loop reveals that perception and thought are never neutral, but always conditioned by systems, habits, and technologies.
The session unfolds step by step, guided by brief explanations and philosophical reflections. It begins with something familiar — a ‘red apple’ — and follows how repeated prompts, recombinations, and reinterpretations gradually yield unexpected and uncanny results.
Drawing on thinkers such as Gilles Deleuze and artists like Johannes Vermeer and Marcel Duchamp, the workshop challenges the assumption that images simply represent reality. Instead, it asks what images — and the algorithms that produce them — actually do.
FFE is not about mastering AI. It is about slowing down, questioning clichés, and recognising how digital images quietly reorganise how we perceive the world — and ourselves. Our fall from algorithmic paradise begins, inevitably, with the consumption of the red apple. This is where the experiment starts.
