Description

This seminar focuses on the intertwined discourse of modern architecture, the constructed notion of modernity, and colonialism in relation to vernacular architecture and ethnographic collections. With contributions from art scholars, anthropologists, researchers, and architecture historians, the colloquium interrogates the ways in which non-Western symbolism and iconography from art and architecture were incorporated into Western architectural thinking during the second half of the twentieth century. This seminar aims to unpack 'modern' architecture's unavoidable connections with questions of colonialism and coloniality, and seeks to explore how cross-cultural interactions might be approached today.
