Landscapes of the Soil: Introduction

Activity: Talk or presentationTalk or presentation at a conference

Description

Soil is one of the most complex biomaterials on Earth and is continuously in exchange with terrestrial systems. With humanity today being Earth’s primary geomorphic agent, the quality of human life and the environment had never depended more on soil management than it does today.
The high soil consumption and the incessant increase in the sealing of urbanization processes, mainly due to building expansion and new infrastructures, constitute a severe threat. Soil plays a crucial role in safeguarding groundwater from pollution, controlling the quantity of atmospheric CO2, regulating surface water flows with direct consequences on floods and landslides, and maintaining biodiversity since plant biomass depends on the state of health of the soil.
Soil has strongly influenced the natural and architectural systems of contemporary cities. The spatial relationship with the landscape has always played an essential role in the city’s design in ancient and contemporary cities.
This conference series will focus on the landscapes of the soil in its broader meaning, exploring its geologies, topographies, taxonomies, palimpsests, and, finally, its architecture and design.
