Learning from the Past for Resilient Futures: Value-based approaches for port city territories

Activity: Talk or presentationTalk or presentation at a workshop, seminar, course or other meeting

Description

At a time of climate change induced sea level rise, coastal areas and the urban settlements alongside them are highly vulnerable spaces. The port cities along the coast together with their maritime foreland and hinterland require attention both in terms of flooding and other water system changes and in terms of facilitation of throughput of goods and people. New quantitative and qualitative methodologies are needed to understand and plan these territories. The Port City Atlas (2023) demonstrates the power of GIS based mapping and invites expansion beyond Europe. Such mapping can also serve as a foundation for value-based approaches and interventions. Analyzing historic path dependencies and their impact on contemporary spaces and planning can provide insights to use in developing a more societally just future. Research on historic ecosystemic approaches, for example, can facilitate inclusive and sustainable practices, an approach in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Focusing on the planning histories of Rotterdam, Hamburg and London, with insights on Philadelphia and Tokyo, the lecture will discuss questions of disaster, resilience and rebuilding, as inspirations for future planning.
