Description

Panel discussion and Report Launch on the NATO Restricted Report:

The Design of AI in C-UAS and the Rule of Law

This interdisciplinary research is being conducted on the nexus of law and technology. The main questions we aim to answer in this research are: How can we develop and/or procure AI applications for military operations so that these adhere to the tenets and core values which constitute the democratic society? And how can we strengthen the (international) Rule of Law when we want to make use of AI in military operations? In our current research, we focus on a specific use case: the potential of AI applications for Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems (C-UAS). We believe that ‘The Design of AI in C-UAS and the Rule of Law’ can be informative and valuable for shaping NATO’s ambitions on the military use of AI within the Rule of Law. Furthermore, this research provides insights in how research initiatives in the field of applied projects on Military AI can be shaped in order to reinforce alignment with NATO’s AI Strategy. In order to analyse what potential points in space and time a C-UAS with AI applications might be used, we make use of realistic scenarios. Scenarios are a useful instrument to simulate a specific threat environment through which potential systems such as C-UAS with AI applications can be deployed.
