Description

Seminar contribution (lecture): "The Turbulant Life of Dutch Housing Heritage - Assessing heritage appreciation through implemented interventions"

Summary:
Post-WWII residential neighbourhoods could be considered future heritage, but their qualities are not self-evident. These neighbourhoods have passed the positive notion of ‘fresh and innovative’ and are now in the ‘long intermezzo of the ordinary’. While our societies face challenges in improving the sustainability of our built environment, the majority of the buildings that require sustainable renovation are not listed, nor has their heritage significance been assessed. How can we recognise the significance of what is still ordinary? One day, all new buildings and neighbourhoods may ‘gain’ heritage status. However, the time gap between the demand for change and recognition of significance is a potential conflict that has the risk of disregarding a legacy.
Studies have been conducted on several renovation projects aimed at improving residential neighbourhoods built after World War II. They demonstrate progress in their goals, techniques and perspective on the existing architecture. Furthermore, the evaluation of the existing housing varies among different professional and non-professional stakeholders. By comparing housing renovations of subsequent time periods, this presentation discusses how the intervention strategy reflects the societal demands and heritage appreciation or lack thereof. It highlights how views on housing have evolved over time, using examples from midrise housing in the 1950s, high-rise flats in the 1960s, and suburban neighborhoods in the 1970s. It showcases the dynamic appreciation through their implemented interventions.
