Description
Presentation held at the second symposium in a series on Drawings as Objects of Knowledge which focused on the "capacity of drawings to hold both history and the future". Through physical encounters with drawings from The Drawing Matter Collection drawings are reactivated in the place of the archive itself. Speakers were invited to re-read, redraw and re-enact a specific (series of) drawing(s) from the archive from the notion of circularity and abundance, held in the existing. In Time Draws the Stone a Jasperine Agate in perfect brecciation from the collection of siliceous minerals of John Ruskin is read as drawing. To do so, the sectional cut through stone, is taken as a starting point and action that reveals drawing as a time-bound, non-linear process informed by material (trans)formation. Reading the particular section drawing, I proposed, reveals several considerations for a circular and regenerative production of architecture.
From the proceedings:
"The symposium views drawings as important moderators in this process of re-use and reappropriation. The past imagined through the drawing can predict a future that is no longer pure and linear, but hybrid and layered. Through their stories, drawings thus become part of a culture of circularity. The archive, which encourages physical encounters with drawings, is a place where practicing architects, researchers and other hybrid practitioners can meet to communicate and exchange their perspectives and interpretations."
