DescriptionPublic trust in the use of AI systems by public institutions has been undermined by a number of instances where the use of AI led to biased, harmful and inaccurate decision-making. In the Netherlands the social benefits scandal is an example of how an AI system led to both unfair treatment and a large number of mistakes. In response to these concerns there is an urgent need to establish trust in the development and use of AI systems by governments. However, how to best communicate the risks and reliability of AI systems – and do so in a way that is engageable and usable by civil society - remains an open question. As we see the increasing use of AI within a variety of public services, we also need new approaches to assess their trustworthiness.
