Future airliners could have even lighter composite structures if new lessons on structural health data are applied. Current aircraft like the Boeing 787 or Airbus A350 are ‘structurally overdesigned’ and their successors could lose weight without compromising structural integrity, the first results of a test campaign by Technical University Delft (The Netherlands) and Patras University (Greece) have learned.
