Increasing a chair's manoeuvrability can compromise balance and control. Top athletes competing in the 2028 Paralympic Games in Los Angeles need a system that analyses stroke quality and wheelchair movement in conjunction with each other. As part of a project group with experts from Delft University of Technology, KNLTB, The Hague University of Applied Sciences, and UMC Groningen, Koen van Arem, PhD candidate in the Statistics Section of the Delft Institute of Applied Mathematics (DIAM), will take on this challenge. On behalf of the group, Koen submitted the project “Ace of Pace: Individualised wheelchair optimisation of striking and movement for wheelchair tennis” to ZonMw’s grant call “Performance call top sport – innovation for gold in LA 2028”, and this application has been approved. Rolstoeltennissers zijn niet altijd gebaat bij de snelste of meest wendbare rolstoel. Als een stoel wendbaarder wordt kan dat ten koste gaan van balans en controle. Voor topsporters op de Paralympische Spelen in Los Angeles (LA) in 2028 is een systeem nodig dat slagkwaliteit en rolstoelbeweging in samenhang analyseert. Als onderdeel van een projectgroep met experts van de TU Delft, KNLTB, de Haagse Hogeschool, en UMC Groningen, zal Koen van Arem, PhD-kandidaat binnen de Statistieksectie van het Delft Institute of Applied Mathematics (DIAM), deze uitdaging aangaan. Namens de groep heeft Koen het project ‘Ace of Pace: Geïndividualiseerde rolstoeloptimalisatie van slaan en bewegen voor rolstoeltennis’ ingediend bij de subsidieoproep ‘Prestatiecall topsport – innovatie voor goud in LA 2028’ van ZonMw, en deze aanvraag is goedgekeurd.
