Description

Opinion piece published in the Dutch national newspaper de Volkskrant (April 2023).

By improving international rail travel services within Europe, and by linking those improved services to the air travel network, short-range flights can be substituted with trains, thus improving sustainability, while maintaining, or even improving Europe's mobility network. Such a scenario would suggest the rise of a number of air-rail hubs in Europe, a function for which the Dutch national airport of Schiphol seems well-positioned. Becoming air-rail hubs requires airports to transition from being mostly air-travel oriented, to becoming truly multimodal travel hubs.
