Ventilation of surface-piercing hydrofoils

Dataset

Description

This dataset collection contains experimental measurements of the onset of ventilation of surface-piercing hydrofoils under steady-state conditions, as reported in Aguiar Ferreira et al. (2026), Journal of Fluid Mechanics, https://doi.org/10.1017/jfm.2026.11126. The experiments were conducted in the towing tank of the Ship Hydromechanics Laboratory at Delft University of Technology. Data were acquired for two hydrofoil profiles (semi-ogive and modified NACA 0010-34), aspect ratios 1.0 and 1.5, and depth-based Froude numbers ranging from 0.5 to 2.5 in increaments of 0.25. The dataset includes time-series measurements of drag, lift, and pitching moment, alongside their corresponding hydrodynamic coefficients, measurements of the ventilation inception angle of attack, classification of observed trigger mechanisms (nose, tail, and base ventilation), and high-resolution flow visualisations above and underwater.
