Dr. ir. Andreas Hegyi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Transport and Planning and a co-director of the Traffic Dynamics Modelling and Control Lab. He received his Ph.D. from TU Delft.

His research interests lie in the fields of urban and freeway traffic control and traffic state estimation. In his research he combines his expertise in traffic engineering with a strong focus on bridging theory and practice, translating academic insights into real-world traffic management solutions.

Research
The main aim of his research is to develop methods and systems for improving urban and freeway traffic management, taking into account various objectives, such as efficiency, safety, emissions, and fairness. He investigates a range of traffic control strategies for variable speed limits, ramp metering, routing, and traffic signals, but also in-car systems. He was involved in several national and international projects, such as DIT4Tram (Distributed Intelligence & Technology for Traffic & Mobility Management), and MiRRORS (Multiscale Integrated Traffic Observatory for Large Road Networks), a research initiative led by TU Delft aimed at developing innovative methods for estimating and forecasting traffic states across large-scale road networks.

Education
In education he is responsible for lecturing on traffic flow modeling and control across various courses, including CIEQ6003 Traffic Modelling and Management, CIEM6250 Transport System Design / Traffic Operations Management, and CIEQ6223 Intelligent Vehicles for Safe and Efficient Traffic: Design and Assessment. He supervises PhD, Master's, and Bachelor's students working in his areas of research interest.
