Research profile

My research interest is to develop operational spatial analyses tools applicable in research and strategic planning regards built environments. The methods and tools have both a quantitative and qualitative approach. The purpose is to gain an understanding in how cities work as regards the location of economic activities, land use, distribution of crime and anti-social behaviour, and how a planning system and a political system can influence or be influenced by the generative power of the spatial structure of built environments. Recently, various spatial analyses tools have been applied on excavated towns. Due to the current trends in city planning, these tools are now on the way to be used in evaluating the impacts of various planning proposals.

Currently I am developing a theory on space and place in built environments based on my 15 years research experience. The aim is to integrate the research traditions with a phenomenological approach with the urban morphology traditions as well as with current research traditions dealing with the mobility network and urban space. It requires an inter-disciplinary approach, where the work from sociologists, perception psychologists, economists, and environmental criminologists as well as from the road engineers needs to be taken into account. The challenge is to clarify and to be precise about the various spatial elements, the various analyses methods and applicability into urban design and planning practice.
