Research profile

Dr. A. (Katerina) Varveri is an Associate Professor of Chemomechanics of Infrastructure Materials at the Engineering Structures department in Civil Engineering and Geosciences at Delft University of Technology.

Her research focuses on the interactions among environment, infrastructure materials and structures. Specifically, she studies the link between the chemo-rheological properties and mechanical performance (property-performance relationships) of paving materials, exploring how these relationships evolve under complex and interacting environmental conditions (moisture damage, oxidative ageing and freeze-thaw), affecting durability of road pavements. To achieve this, her group integrates advanced physicochemical characterization and modelling, multivariate statistics, chemometrics and analytical tools. In 2020, Katerina was awarded with an NWO Talent Programme VENI grant from NWO-AES (NL) on this topic.

Katerina's research extends to exploring the potential of biobased materials as substitutes for traditional bitumen in pavement construction, using a chemomechanics-based material design approach. Her group aims to create innovative binders that integrate with other sustainable practices, including the incorporation of recycled materials and the implementation of low-temperature asphalt production methods. The objective is to develop binders that not only meet technical performance standards, but also exhibit long-term durability and have a low environmental impact.

Katerina is the Research Coordinator for the Netherlands in the Forum of European National Highway Research Laboratories (FEHRL) and the secretary of the Academy of Pavement and Science and Engineering (APSE). Since 2020, she also serves as the Deputy Chair in the RILEM Technical Committee 295-FBB on fingerprinting bituminous binders.
