Dr. Alfredo Núñez is the Head of Railways and an Associate Professor specializing in intelligent railway infrastructure at Delft University of Technology. His expertise lies in intelligent transportation systems, railway engineering, and computational intelligence, with over 150 journal and conference publications. The Dutch Research Council, ProRail, and European projects have supported his research. Dr. Núñez has played key roles in various EU projects, including serving as a work package leader in In2Track3 and NeTIRail-INFRA, and cluster leader for developments in railway infrastructure in ERJU FP3 IAM4RAIL. He has served as an associate editor and guest editor for leading journals, including IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, Applied Soft Computing, Intelligent Transportation Infrastructure, Wear, and Control Engineering Practice. He has also contributed to organizing roles at major conferences such as IEEE-ITSC 2013, TRISTAN IX, CM2018, and IEEE WCCI 2026, and has been a speaker in over 50 conferences and workshops.

Dr. Núñez has mentored numerous PhD researchers and MSc and EngD students, with some receiving prestigious awards, including the European Rail Research Advisory Council PhD thesis award, the PWI Young Achiever Award, and a best journal paper award. He is also dedicated to education, contributing to the redesign of courses and MSc programs and to the development of online professional courses. At TU Delft, he is part of the teaching teams for Dynamica en Modelvorming, Transportation Infrastructures, Road and Railway Engineering, Transportation Infrastructures under Extreme Conditions, Emerging Technologies for Transportation Infrastructure, and Structural Health Monitoring. Additionally, he has been involved in academic and industry collaborations, serving as a member of the 4TU Built Environment’s Domain Acceleration Team for Infrastructure, the CiTG Faculty ED&I team, and New Ecosystems for CiTG.

Dr. Núñez has been a visiting research scholar at the University of California (Berkeley and Irvine), the University of Maryland, the University of Chile, the University of Ljubljana, Southwest Jiaotong University, the University of Seville, the Technical University of Catalunya, the University of Pavia, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and the Universidad Nacional de Colombia.
