Research profile

Benedict Lane is a postdoctoral researcher in the faculty of Technology, Policy and Management at TU Delft, and part of the Ethics of Quantum Technologies research team. His academic background spans both quantum physics and moral philosophy, and his current role represents a confluence of these two interests. He obtained his MSc in physics and philosophy from the University of Bristol and went on to earn his PhD in moral philosophy from the University of Exeter. At TU Delft, he explores the ethical dimensions of quantum technologies from a number of different angles, including: the question of fairly allocating quantum computing time; the ethics of quantum technologies when considered as part of complex sociotechnical networks; and how quantum innovation ecosystems can be oriented towards the aspiration of “quantum for good”. He also maintains a strong interest in fundamental moral philosophy and metaethics, exploring how shifts in ethical understanding interact with technological innovation.
