Research profile

Deanne Spek is a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, in collaboration with University Medical Centre Utrecht, where she explores the intersections of participatory design, healthcare and empathy. Her PhD seeks to understand how designers can contribute to systemic changes in healthcare where collaboration is crucial: how, where and when can designing for empathy contribute to a care system in which we can all be human? With collaboration, she not only includes relationships between healthcare providers, patients and relatives, but also relationships between professionals from different disciplines or even different domains (such as social support). Personal experiences, empathy, and vulnerability of the designer and stakeholders involved play a key role in her research.
