Fredrik Karlsson is a PhD candidate at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. He explores how design practices can improve how digital health solutions are implemented into clinical practice. Design practice can help implementation in the generation, refinement, and iteration of ideas regarding how to adapt digital health solutions to fit into practice. All healthcare practices differ, which makes the implementation process different and can demand different adaptations to the digital health solutions and the context that it is placed in. By improving implementations, it is possible to avoid some issues and gain more value from the digital health solutions being implemented.
Academic Background
The first step Fredrik took into the intersection between healthcare and design was at Chalmers University of Technology when he studied the products and systems used by ambulance nurses and how they affected their work. In his master's thesis he explored how to design the experience of using a smart product for emptying the bowel, together with Wellspect Healthcare. Before starting the PhD, he worked with implementing ICT solutions in the prehospital sector as a project manager at Lindholmen Science Park.
