Wetlands (e.g. salt marshes and mangrove systems) are highly productive ecosystems that provide valuable functions. One of the challenges facing wetlands is accelerated sea-level rise (SLR). The ability of wetlands to keep pace with SLR largely depends on vertical accretion rates. This implies a need for sufficient sediment that can be transported towards the systems.

Jianwei's PhD research focuses on investigating the role of saltmarsh creeks in sediment transport. This study is part of the Coping with Deltas in Transition project within the framework of the Programme Strategic Scientific Alliances between China and the Netherlands.

Currently, Jianwei works on the MUMACO (Mussels as Mangrove Facilitators for Coastal Defense) project as a postdoc, exploring sediment transport processes, particularly under storm conditions, and assessing the potential of mussel farming in the creeks within the mangrove intertidal system in Demak, Indonesia.
