Research profile

My aim is to develop theories and models of how sandy beaches reshape under waves and currents. Non-linear interactions (e.g. between waves and the suspension of sand) make this into a challenging field of science. My group is specialized in applying this knowledge to quantify the impact of man-made sandy interventions in beach systems. These interventions (so called nourishments), where sand is placed on or near the beach, are an important engineering method to counteract erosion and support the many societal functions of the beach (e.g. recreation, safety against flooding, ecology). Research activities often contain observations at (nourished) beaches combined with strategic modelling and the occasional laboratory experiment.
