Personal profile
Research profile
I am a PhD Candidate at TU Delft working on the philosophy of synthetic biology under the supervision of Dr. James Hutton, Dr. Lotte Asveld and Prof. Dr. Jeroen van den Hoven. As a member of the EVOLF consortium that is working on developing the synthetic cell, I will investigate different philosophical perspectives on what distinguishes life from non-life to better understand the philosophical implications of developing the synthetic cell and related novel entities.
Academic background
Although my academic trajectory might appear diffuse at first glance, it is tied together by my general interest in the processes of life and of human knowledge generation. I completed a Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Sciences (BSc) and in parallel, a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy (BA) at the University of Amsterdam. During my Bachelor studies I specialized in neuroscience and in the philosophy of mathematics and logic. These subjects sparked my curiosity for neuroscience and cognitive science, leading me to enroll in the interdisciplinary research master Brain and Cognitive Sciences (MRes) where I pursued research on cognitive modelling and theories of (social) cognition. Not being able to let philosophy go, I completed a Master's degree in Philosophy, specializing in philosophy of science, writing a thesis on the philosophy of agent-based models in cognitive science and scientific understanding.
