As an NWO PhD, Sjoerd Zwart wrote a thesis about distances on Lindenbaum Algebras, published in 2001 under the title Refined Verisimilitude (Kluwer). After being the Research coordinator of the Applied Logic Laboratory (UvA), Zwart started to work as a philosopher of science at the Delft and Eindhoven Universities of Technology. His current research concentrates on engineering epistemology and critical thinking for engineers. Engineering is normative all the way down (technically, socially, morally, and aesthetically), and it should be emancipated from the misleading from of "applied science". Zwart uses the distinctions between descriptive versus normative issues and deductive vs ampliative reasoning as his most fundamental research tools.
