Wander van Baalen is a postdoctoral researcher at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. His work is characterized by an enduring interest in the (e)valuation of knowledge practices, the formation of public issues, and initiatives that seek to democratize knowledge production. His approach is informed and inspired by science and technology studies, the history and philosophy of science, and ethnographic research methods.
In his current position, Wander is involved in two primary research tracks. He is part of the art-science project Re-imagining Caring Societies, funded by Medical Delta, and he is a member of the Initiative on Innovation in Delft Engineering Education (IDEE). Within IDEE, his work focuses on the governance of transdisciplinary education, with the goal of steadily building toward a sustainable transdisciplinary research ecosystem at TU Delft.
Wander holds a PhD in Philosophy from Erasmus University Rotterdam, where his research focused on initiatives that aimed to reimagine dominant modes of knowledge production, particularly in relation to complex societal issues. In his previous affiliations, Wander worked as a researcher at the Rotterdam Arts & Sciences Lab (RASL) and Codarts University for the Arts, and as a lecturer in the Humanities department of Erasmus University College.He is the co-editor of This Is Not a Gardening Book: The Cultivation of Transdisciplinary Practices (2023) and has published peer-reviewed articles on transdisciplinarity, knowledge politics, and the practicalities and potential of art-science collaborations.
