Research profile

Dr Yared Abayneh Abebe is a Postdoc Researcher at Delft University of Technology. He is mainly involved in the Pandemic and Disaster Preparedness Center (PDPC) frontrunner project Pandemic lessons for flood disaster preparedness. He is also a Researcher in the H2020 project RECONECT at IHE Delft Institute for Water Education. His main research is on improving and developing models for planning and evaluating nature-based solutions that reduce hydro-meteorological hazards. 

Previously, Yared worked as an individual consultant supporting the Platform on Disaster Displacement (PDD) on data collection and decision-making model development concerning flood displacement risk in East Africa. He had also been involved in a fact-finding and needs assessment mission in Sint Maarten after the deadly Hurricane Irma struck the island in September 2017.

Academic background

Yared earned his PhD from TU Delft and IHE Delft, the Netherlands, in December 2020 with Cum Laude (Distinction). His thesis on modelling human-flood interactions was awarded the 2021 Technical Steven Hoogendijk Prize of the Batavian Society of Experimental Philosophy after a jury selected the thesis as the best among around 40 Cum Laude theses defended at TU Delft in 2019 and 2020. He obtained his MSc in Water Science and Engineering, specialization Hydroinformatics with Distinction from IHE Delft in April 2011. His BSc was in Soil and Water Engineering and Management from Haramaya University, Ethiopia, which he earned with Distinction in July 2006.

Research interests

Yared’s research at TU Delft focuses on exploring flood impacts on healthcare facilities, especially developing flood hazard scenarios, quantifying direct and indirect impacts and analyzing the effects of various preparedness strategies/measures.

In general, his main research interest lies in the broader area of disaster risk management. However, the hazards he mainly addresses are floods and hurricanes. His research areas include:

  • hydrodynamic modelling of floods and hurricanes
  • empirical models for hurricane wind generation
  • hazard, exposure, vulnerability, risk and impacts (loss/damages) assessment
  • nature-based solutions for flood risk reduction
  • disaster displacement
  • agent-based modelling of socio-technical systems
  • disaster risk policy (institutions) analysis
