Description

Transoceanic Disclose: Weaving Architectural Herstories examines the architectural and urban contributions of the first generation of Indonesian women who graduated shortly after Indonesia's independence in 1949. The history of these female architects and urban planners has only recently received more attention. A significant amount of previously unresearched or archived material has also come to light. This project focuses on the life stories, education and design work of seven of these pioneering female architects. The connections with the history of women in architecture in the Netherlands are also examined. The most important question is: how has the colonization of Indonesia influenced the design work of these women? Architects and researchers María Novas and Rachel Lee are working on the project together with the Indonesian architect and researcher Erika Y. Astuti and the School of Architecture, Planning and Policy Development (part of the Institut Teknologi Bandung) and the Indonesian Association of Architects in Yogyakarta and Bandung. Lidewij Tummers supervises the project. As a result of the research, an article will be written and Wikipedia edit-a-thon will be organised. A traveling exhibition will be on display in Jakarta, Yogyakarta and Bandung, the three major Indonesian cities where most female architects have lived or worked.
