A dynamically consistent gradient model derived from a discrete microstructure: higher-order stiffness and higher-order inertia

    Abstract

Higher-order gradient models are derived from a discrete microstructure via continualisation procedures. Distinction is made between standard continualisation, which inevitably lead to anomalies in the dispersive behaviour of the resulting continuum, and a newly proposed alternative continualisation, by which these anomalies can be avoided completely. The new continualisation method results in a continuum description that is dynamically consistent, in the sense that each higher-order stiffness term is accompanied by a higher-order inertia term. Furthermore, the static version of the model is able to eliminate singularities from the strain field.
