Abstract

This paper is a contribution to the ongoing discussion on optimization of multistable structures, with particular focus on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) applications. An intuitive discrete-link model that exhibits some of the relevant physics of a typical multistable structure is presented. This simple model is used to demonstrate the challenges of optimizaing multistable structures via example optimization problems relevant to MEMS. Some methods for properly treating the problems are discussed. Keywords: bistable, multistable, MEMS, optimization.
