abstract = "This paper is a contribution to the ongoing discussion on optimization of multistable structures, with particular focus on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) applications. An intuitive discrete-link model that exhibits some of the relevant physics of a typical multistable structure is presented. This simple model is used to demonstrate the challenges of optimizaing multistable structures via example optimization problems relevant to MEMS.
