Analysis of transient behaviour of bow-tie antennas excited by UWB pulses

    Abstract

    Bow-tie antenna are widely used in ultra-wideband (UWB) applications such as ground penetrating radar (GPR) because of iets relatively larege bandwidth and simplicity. In this paper we concentrate on the application of bow-tie antennas for impulse GPR, in which the antennas are excited with transient UWB pulses. For this application the transient behavior of the antenna should be known. Therefore, in this paper the bow-tie antennas are analyzed in time domain for different flare angles in free space and in a half-space. For the latter, the analysis is performed for different antenna elevations above different types of soil. In particular, we analyze the variation of the waveforms transmitted by the antennas into soil and the pulses reflected at the ends of the antennas to investigate the influence of the soil on the antenna performance.
