Abstract

The order includes obligately anaerobic, moderately salt-tolerant, and alkaliphilic anaerobic bacteria hydrolyzing chitin and fermenting its monomer to form H2, organic acids, and alcohols. The cells are short motile spirilla with a Gram-negative type of cell wall. They form lipid cysts filled with polyhydroxyalkanoate granules. Members are found in soda lakes (Sorokin et al., 2012, 2016). It is the only order in
the class Chitinispirillia (phylum Fibrobacterota) and consists of a single family, the Chitinispirillaceae. Type genus: Chitinispirillum Sorokin et al. 2016, VL170.
