Cyber-Physical System Modeling for Assessment and Enhancement of Power Grid Cyber Security, Resilience, and Reliability

Research output: Chapter in Book/Conference proceedings/Edited volumeChapterScientificpeer-review

Abstract

Power grids are increasingly dependent on operational technologies (OT) and information and communication technologies (ICT) networks for real-time monitoring and control of physical facilities. ICT and OT systems are coupled with the power grid and together, they form an interdependent and complex cyber-physical energy system (CPS). In this chapter, cyber security and resilience of power grids are discussed. The security controls and vulnerabilities of power systems are reviewed. Recent cyber intrusions and attacks confirmed the importance of cyber security and resilience of power grids to cyber attacks. A research program and an integrated CPS model are presented to assess and improve cyber security and resilience to cyber attacks and natural disasters of integrated cyber-physical energy systems.
