Abstract

This exhibition is the result of an open call for contributions from the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment (TU Delft), intending to display the work our faculty members and students are undertaking towards understanding what artificial intelligence is and what it means to the world of design.

Computational generative design, the digitalisation of spatial usage data or the nature of our future lives in the metaverse are, to name just a few, topics that have been explored at schools of design for some time already. In this context, the interest amongst students, scholars and all design professionals in keeping their practice at the cutting edge of technology is, undoubtedly, rising.

If artificial intelligence is everywhere (from the apps on our phones to the algorithms of search engines), how is it transforming the design of buildings, cities and landscapes? As we move from form to information, will artificial intelligence replace designers? As the Planet is already being governed by information technology, what are the transferable skills for designers to be used elsewhere? …

Our intention was to accommodate a wide range of content representing the implementations or effects of digitalisation in all departments of BK, including, but not limited to VR student reviews, computational generative design, digitalisation of spatial usage data or AI as a design tool. Different media supports, such as imagery, physical models, projections, video and other digital content, were thus accepted.

We hope this update on the opening of new discourses, other means of expression and new ways of theorising technology and design produced at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment will help to show light on the direction Education is taking, encourage everyone to ponder upon answers to some of the questions above, and most importantly, think of alternatives if necessary.
