Abstract
This series of publications seeks to explore cities and landscapes along the coastline of northeast Italy: from the Unesco heritage town of Palmanova, the Marano lagoon and the ‘Bassa Friulana’, the Venice lagoon and its forgotten islands, to the Polesine, a territory within the Po delta.
These areas are experiencing problems occasioned by hydraulic risk, subsidence, sea-water incursion, soil erosion, industrial and agricultural pollution – the legacy of its industrial past – and in a territory that despite the major coastal protection works of the past will once again, and soon, be repossessed by the sea.
Can landscape become an economic resource? Can we meet the challenges and create “agile” lands?
These projects start from the belief that the landscape is not only an environmental resource but also a factor that can become an economic resource, a major driving force for an alternative development
of the territory and its cities. Thanks to practical research work in the form of design projects we are trying to give life
to revitalized economies, by proposing simple and feasible ideas so that the actual environmental and economic cycles may be replaced by a circular economy. Starting from these projects we intend to nurture small and large seeds of hope in order to trigger change.
The first volume is dedicated to the ‘Bassa Friulana’, the lowest part of the Friuli region.
