Abstract
The field of international comparative housing research has long neglected the Mediterranean members of the European Union (Portugal, Spain, Italy and Greece). Lacking the necessary knowledge, data or language skills (or a combination of these), many scholars have simply omitted these countries from their international comparisons. Despite this paucity of empirical studies, most researchers intuitively assume that housing systems in southern Europe are different from those in western and northern Europe.
