Abstract

Multilevel inverters present specific and interesting features such as high-quality output waveform, scalability, and low stress on the devices. Many diverse multilevel inverter topologies have been presented in the literature. However, in most cases they come with complexity and need multiple dc sources which limit their applications. In this paper, a new topology of hybrid single-dc source coupled-inductor (CI) flying capacitor (FC) multilevel inverter (MLI), CIFCMLI, is introduced and analyzed. In comparison with other topologies, the proposed topology maintains a favorable balance between the number of circuit components and performance. A dedicated phase-shifted carrier pulse-width modulation (PS-PWM) is proposed for the MLI which enables the intrinsic voltage regulation of the FCs as well as the current balance of the CIs. The proposed topology is compared to other similar topologies to verify its advantages and potential disadvantages. To verify the performance of the proposed CIFCMLI the simulation results are provided. Also, the experimental results are presented to support its performance in practice.
