Abstract

In February 1971, the Turkish architectural journal Mimarlık published the first issue of the year in an unusual fashion. The cover is divided into a red color block at the top and a red filtered photograph of a meeting at which a group of people sit behind a long table. Behind the photograph of seated people are banners that read, “Our fight is part of the people’s fight,” “Down with the American imperialism,” and “Independent Turkey” (fig. 1). At first glance, its bold and provocative cover, which makes no reference to the profession of architecture, looks more like the posters hung on the exterior walls of buildings than an architectural journal.
