Narrating Places beyond the Subjective: Delft University of Technology Graduation Projects

This article discusses the graduation work of a number of students at Delft University of Technology, who used narrative methods for analysis and design. The students used these methods from different perspectives and with different purposes. Some emphasised the experience of place; others used stories as part of a social strategy and still others used them as creative tools. We hope to show how the various narrative methods enabled students to focus on specific aspects of place making while exploring the potential of the narrative method to take a step beyond the subjective. During the studies, the use of narrative methods helped to structure and objectify experiential aspects; to explore standpoints and views of other users, residents or passers-by, and to base fictional design proposals on a profound understanding of the existing, physical reality of a place.

Dit artikel bespreekt het afstudeerwerk van een aantal studenten aan de TU Delft, die narratieve methoden hebben ingezet voor analyse en ontwerp. De studenten gebruikten ze vanuit verschillende invalshoeken en met verschillende doelen. Sommigen legden de nadruk op de ervaring van de plek, anderen benutten verhalen als een sociale strategie, weer anderen als creatief gereedschap. We hopen aan te tonen hoe de verschillende narratieve methoden de studenten in staat stelden zich op specifieke aspecten van het plek-maken te richten, terwijl ze de potenties van de verhalende methode verkenden om een stap voorbij het subjectieve te zetten. Het gebruik van narratieve methoden hielp in deze studies om ervaringsaspecten te structureren en objectief te maken; om meningen en gezichtspunten van andere gebruikers, bewoners of voorbijgangers te verkennen, en om fictieve ontwerpvoorstellen te baseren op een diepgravend begrip van de bestaande, fysieke realiteit van een plek.
