Abstract
This manuscript describes the development of a set of 16 inspiration cards. The cards portray conceptual alarm clock designs and need profiles, indicating which fundamental psychological needs are fulfilled by each design. The cards aim to provide some insights in the relationship between product design and fundamental needs. The alarm clocks were designed with a focus on providing
pleasure (or reducing displeasure) or on providing positive meaning (or reducing negative meaning). The need profiles were made with a typology of 13 fundamental needs. A questionnaire study (N = 34) examined the degree to which each alarm clock design fulfils each of the 13 fundamental needs.
The results were used to create visual (bar‐graph based) need profiles for all 16 designs. The resulting cards are intended to be used in an educational setting, as a support in a discussion about product design and need fulfilment.
