Abstract

Congestion is increasingly becoming a problem for developed countries like the Netherlands. Especially non-recurrent congestion is expected to present the largest difficulties to travelers, because of its unpredictable nature. ITS is one of the available methods for dealing with congestion. For this research project, traffic and travel information is the viewpoint for looking at congestion. This paper selects three non-recurrent traffic situations based on a traffic and road user side of non-recurrence. The traffic side deals with actual figures of congestion and reliability. The road user side presents the road users. The three situations (accidents, road works and large events) are used for further research regarding information needs and route choice.
