Abstract

The Dutch capacity manual for freeways has been extended with, amongst others, capacity values for asymmetrical weaving sections. This paper presents these capacity values, which were estimated through simulation. Capacities were determined for 10 weaving section configurations, 5 weaving section lengths, 4 percentages of trucks, and 4 percentages of weaving traffic, using symmetrical OD patterns. It was found that weaving section length had limited influence on capacity, mainly because the minimum lengths are already considerable. The percentage of trucks and the weaving flow rate were of more importance: as expected, capacity decreased with truck percentage and weaving flow rate. Sensitivity analyses showed that for non-symmetrical OD patterns quite different capacity values resulted than for the symmetrical OD patterns. Consequently, in the future additional simulations with different OD patterns may be required.
